Publishing
This guide will cover how to prepare a Story Map for publishing. After a Story Map is published to the public, it will be viewable without having to log into an ArcGIS Online account. The general workflow to publish a story map is to first ensure that it works well across devices and then submit a request to publish.
Publish your story
When you work on your Story Map, all changes are saved as a draft. This version is only available to you and the ArcGIS Online administrators. Publishing allows for a broader audience to view a Story Map.
Use the follwing the steps to publish a story map:
Click "Publish" in the story builder header
Choose the audience (see "publishing levels")
Wait for the publishing process to check for issues related to the sharing settings of ArcGIS content used inthe story.
Share the items that are not already shared with the audience you selected
You will see this prompt if the story contains maps or layers that are not shared with the audience you selected.
- If you have permissions to share these items, click Yes share these items and the builder will automatically update the sharing for these items.
- If you do not choose to share the maps or layers, or do not have the required permission, click Continue without changing. Placeholders for the unshared items will be used for members of your audience who do not have permissions to view them.
Publishing levels
There are four different options when publishing a Story Map, each differing in who will be able to see it.
-
Private: only the creator of the story map can view after sigining in
-
Organization : members of NHMLAC can view after signing in
-
Public (everyone): the general public can view without signing in
-
Groups: groups, as defined in AGOL Groups
It is best practice to publish to private or organization when working on your story map. Publishing to the organization can particularly helpful when you need it reviewed by someone else at NHMLAC, but not accessible by the general public via a search engine.
Publishing to the public
When the time comes to finalize your Story Map and make it generally available, it will need to be published with its sharing set to "Everyone (Public)".
While anyone can publish to Private and Organization, you must contact your ArcGIS Online administrator to publish a story map to the Public.
To send a request to publish a story map, fill out the GIS Request Form (opens in a new tab) and choose "Creating a Story Map" under "How can we help?"
Before sending a request to publish your a story map to the public, please test it following the steps in Testing a Story Map
